POL 103 Serial 2 Ep.3 “Escaping”

Serial Podcast Season 2 Episode 3- Reflection

In this episode, the podcast goes over Bowe’s only two escape attempts.  The first one occurred in week one of his capture. Bowe says it lasted about 15 minutes. He managed to unwrap his wrists, untie his feet and untie the wire latch.  Once Bowe was out of his room he saw three houses and runs past the first two and then some young men spot him and Bowe hides on the roof of the third house. He was quickly found and was brought back to the place they were keeping him.  The backlash Bowe suffered were intense and brutal beatings. He was then moved to a new location and shackled to each corner of an Afghan bed. Sarah says, Three months Bowe was chained spread eagle to a bed and blindfolded.” Bowe was forced into being in propaganda videos and videos of him bad mouthing to the United States. In one place where Bowe was there was this one little boy who showed Bowe his baseball hat.  This hat was written in English and named the area Bowe was currently in. After a while, at the location in North Waziristan, they moved Bowe to a compound in the mountains in a non-populated region. Bowe called the place the mountain fortress. Over the past few months, Bowe got his hands on a makeshift escape kit including a nail, PVC pipe, a key, and a wooden stake. In the middle of the night, while at the fortress, Bowe climbed out his second story window and just started getting as far away as he could so it would be harder to find him.  While trying to hide Bowe walked off a cliff and did serious damage to his left side of his body. None the less Bowe crawled and hid for what he thinks was about eight days. During those eight days, Bowe was almost caught many times and he heard and saw American drones. Bowe found a small stream that he drank from and ate some grass which was very sparse. Once Bowe was found they brought him back to the mountain fortress. Bowe remembers being attacked but not too severely because his captors knew he wouldn’t survive a beating. In the next few days, Bowe had a meeting with Mullah Sangeen who was in charge of Bowe until 2013, when Sangeen died. In the meeting, Sangeen conveyed to Bowe that if Bowe ever attempted to escape again they would kill him.

After looking at the maps in the Listening Guide, I see that Bowe was transported all over. From OP Mest to Ghazni and then to North Waziristan and likely more parts of North and South Waziristan. I have learned that the terrain was rough because of the mountains, rocky land, desert and extreme weather changes. Do they know where he actually was when he escaped? What were the long term damages to his health? Especially because of the fall?
